Why do Tontines pay higher lifetime incomes?

With a regular savings account or trust, if you spend more than you are earning on your investments then you will deplete your capital.

The amount you can spend from your Tontine is always higher because you receive the investment income and some of the capital.

The capital is never depleted though because the rule in a Tontine is that "When a member passes away they no longer need the income".

As a result, you can expect regular ongoing mini-inheritances from thousands of leftover balances.

So in reality, you are sharing the risk of living a long life with others of similar life expectancies and when those other members pass away, they are passing their baton to you.
